چکیده

We introduce a new framework for a descriptive complexity approach to arithmetic computations. We define a hierarchy of classes based on the idea of counting assignments to free function variables in first-order formulae. We completely determine the inclusion structure and show that #P and #AC0 appear as classes of this hierarchy. In this way, we unconditionally place #AC0 properly in a strict hierarchy of arithmetic classes within #P. We compare our classes with a hierarchy within #P defined in a model-theoretic way by Saluja et al. We argue that our approach is better suited to study arithmetic circuit classes such as #AC0 which can be descriptively characterized as a class in our framework. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation, F.1.3 Complexity Measures and Classes, F.4.1 Mathematical Logic

Some Lower Bounds in Parameterized AC^0

We demonstrate some lower bounds for parameterized problems via parameterized classes corresponding to the classical AC0. Among others, we derive such a lower bound for all fptapproximations of the parameterized clique problem and for a parameterized halting problem, which recently turned out to link problems of computational complexity, descriptive complexity, and proof theory. To show the fir...

Model-Theoretic Characterizations of Boolean and Arithmetic Circuit Classes of Small Depth

In this paper we give a characterization of both Boolean and arithmetic circuit classes of logarithmic depth in the vein of descriptive complexity theory, i.e., the Boolean classes NC1, SAC1 and AC1 as well as their arithmetic counterparts #NC1, #SAC1 and #AC1. We build on Immerman’s characterization of constant-depth polynomial-size circuits by formulae of first-order logic, i.e., AC0 = FO, an...

Multiparty Communication Complexity and Threshold Circuit Size of sfAC0

We prove an nΩ(1)/4k lower bound on the randomized k-party communication complexity of depth 4 AC0 functions in the number-on-forehead (NOF) model for up to Θ(log n) players. These are the first nontrivial lower bounds for general NOF multiparty communication complexity for any AC0 function for ω(log logn) players. For nonconstant k the bounds are larger than all previous lower bounds for any A...

On Tc 0 , Ac 0 , and Arithmetic Circuits 1

Continuing a line of investigation that has studied the function classes #P [Val79b], #SAC1 [Val79a, Vin91, AJMV], #L [AJ93b, Vin91, AO94], and #NC1 [CMTV96], we study the class of functions #AC0. One way to de ne #AC0 is as the class of functions computed by constant-depth polynomial-size arithmetic circuits of unbounded fan-in addition and multiplication gates. In contrast to the preceding fu...
